Better Community Through Soup?

March 13, 2017

It may sound odd, the idea that community could be created or strengthened through soup, but we don't think it's odd at all. Food brings families together. It's how we bond with friends. Eating is something everyone does multiple times a day. It's how we survive.

Social scientists have documented the fraying of American community and the costs are tragic - loneliness, addiction, depression, suicide. The Stone Soup Collective exists, in part, to bring the people of Charleston together and give us the opportunity to nourish our neighbors as we nourish ourselves and our families. We believe that by making kindness a regular, convenient, delicious and life affirming choice we can reconnect, or deepen our connection, with what it means to be a meaningful part of a vibrant community.

Social scientists have also documented the magical power of kindness: people who practice kindness (even as an assignment rather than an innate inclination) become happier, and happier people are more likely to act kindly. This is a beautiful feedback loop: an engine of personal and social transformation that we intend to stoke.

The Stone Soup Collective isn't just made up of its employees, its volunteers, and its benefactors - it's also made up of everyone who eats our soup. You become a part of this adventure in community building through soup when you choose to incorporate our culinary creations - made with love and a commitment to sustainability - into your, and your family's diet.

The first, and often most critical, step in creating anything new in the world is to share it with others in a way that touches them and inspires them to act, even if the act is simply to share the idea with their friends and family. So if you are inspired by the idea of better community through soup, please consider joining us, whether by sharing what we're up to, buying our soup, or donating your time, talents, or funds. We do hope you will!
